Reliability Strategy Sprint™

Making Reliability Simple™ in Your Organisation

The Reliability Strategy Sprint™ is a 12-week live training and coaching program aimed at Plant Managers and Maintenance Managers in asset-intensive industries to help them create a simple, yet effective Reliability Strategy for their specific plant and finally escape the vicious cycle of reactive maintenance.

What's a Reliability Strategy Sprint?

How it works

  • Over a period of 12 weeks, you will attend online workshops to increase your knowledge and understanding of key maintenance & reliability concepts, use our tools and templates to assess your current state and with our guidance develop your own Reliability Strategy to help you and your team escape the vicious cycle of reactive maintenance once and for all.

  • In addition to the online workshops, there will be Group Q&A Calls and 1-on-1 Coaching Calls.

What you can expect

  • Practical guidance and a complete suite of tools and templates and everything else you need to develop an effective Reliability Strategy.

  • Personal attention, guidance and coaching from Erik.

What we’ll work on (and what not)

  • In our online workshops we will discuss the core elements of an effective Reliability Strategy, after which you will use our assessment tools to review your current practices and determine key gaps to address.

  • You will use those assessments to develop your own documented Reliability Strategy supported by a robust business case and presentation that you can pitch to your team and leadership.

  • Through our 1-on-1 Coaching Calls you will get individual support and feedback to help you build and effective and convincing Reliability Strategy.

Typical expected client outcomes

Although this is a new program, from personal experience and working with consulting clients we know this approach works very well to escape the vicious cycle of reactive maintenance, ultimately leading to 35% increase in productivity, up to 90% less downtime, substantial decreases in maintenance costs, improved profitability, better team morale and better safety.

Program Structure

The Reliability Strategy Sprint is an intensive 12-week program:

The purpose of this first week is to make sure all participants are set up to make the most of the program. We will work through the Road to Reliability Framework™ so you understand what we will focus on for these 12 weeks, but I will also personally conduct 1-on-1 onboarding calls with all participants.

Key tasks this week:

  • Attend the Online workshop (2-hours) to understand the current state of maintenance & reliability in most organisations around the world, why most organisations remain stuck in the vicious cycle or reactive maintenance and the core elements of the Road to Reliability™ Framework to help you break free and finally create a Reliable Plant that is not only more reliable, but also more profitable and safer.
  • Complete your 1-on-1 Onboarding Call to get clear on your unique circumstances, challenges and start thinking about key aspects that you need to reflect in your Reliability Strategy. These calls are all about making sure you as an individual, and your organisation, will get the most out of the program.

In Week 2 we start our focus on Planning & Scheduling so you understand why and how it helps to create that more stable working environment that is such an important enabler to the rest of your reliability journey. You will then (together with your team) use our online assessment tool to assess your current Planning & Scheduling practices.

Key tasks this week:

  • Attend the Online workshop (2-hours) to understand the core elements of an effective and efficient Maintenance Planning & Scheduling Process.
  • Assess your current Planning & Scheduling practices – conduct GEMBA and use the P&S Scorecard to assess current process.
Week 3 is all about how you implement the necessary changes in your Planning & Process. We say that “implementing maintenance planning & scheduling is a change management project.” And in this week, you will start to understand our Implementation Framework so that all the change you create is ultimately sustained. You will also determine how much value you organisation can create through improving maintenance productivity by better planning & scheduling.

Key tasks this week:

  • Attend the Online workshop (2-hours) to understand the elements of an effective implementation framework that will ensure process changes that are made, can be sustained in the long run.

  • Use our Wrench Time Calculator to determine the Value Opportunity.

In Week 4 we start to focus on Preventive Maintenance to understand what we need to do to ensure our PM Programs are both effective and efficient. You will also commence the assessment of your current PM program and your current practices around creating and updating PM tasks using our assessment tools.

Key task this week:

  • Attend the Online workshop (2-hours) to understand the principles behind creating an effective and efficient PM program.

  • Assess your Preventive Maintenance Program – conduct GEMBA and use the Preventive Maintenance Scorecard to assess the current state.

In Week 5 we continue the focus on Preventive Maintenance by exploring the different methodologies to improve your PM program (RCM, PMO and FMEA), when to use them (and when not) and how to run PM Improvement Projects before eventually moving into a ‘Living Program’ phase. You will also assess the potential value you can gain from improving your PM Program.

Key tasks this week:

  • Online workshop (2-hours) to understand which PM improvement methodologies to use, when and how.

  • Use our PM Program Tool to determine the Value Opportunity.

In Week 6 we switch focus to Root Cause Analysis and Defect Elimination. We start by understanding the different between the two, the importance of focussing on bad actors before heading down the path of Defect Elimination and how to instil fact-based problem solving in your team. And you will start assessing your practices in this area using our RCA & DE Scorecard.

Key tasks this week:

  • Online workshop (2-hours) to understand the principles behind effective RCA and DE programs.

  • Assess own RCA & DE process – conduct GEMBA and use the RCA & DE Scorecard to assess current state.

In Week 7 we will focus on how to implement an effect RCA program and how to eventually move into Defect Elimination. We will discuss in more detail the process you need to implement, and the systems you need to get in place for this process to work. You will also assess the value opportunity you have by eliminating most of your repeat failures.

Key tasks this week:

  • Online workshop (2-hours) to implement an effective and efficient RCA program which can over time develop into a DE program.

  • Use our RCA & DE Tool to determine the Value Opportunity.

In Week 8 we shift our focus away from our work processes to the concepts of Leadership and Culture. We will talk extensively about leadership and the role that leadership plays in the change journey, as well as how you sustain those changes through building a Reliability Culture. We discuss the key elements of a reliability Culture and touch on the concept of the Reliability Culture Ladder.

Key tasks this week:

  • Online workshop (2-hours) to understand the key elements to creating a Reliability Culture, and the role Leadership plays in implementing your Reliability Strategy. Introduction of the Reliability Culture Ladder concept.

In Week 9 we focus in depth on the Reliability Culture Ladder, the different stages and participants start to conduct a self-assessment. We also explore how we can progressively move up the different stages on the Reliability Culture Ladder.

Key tasks this week:

  • Online workshop (2-hours) to understand how to create a Reliability Culture when escaping from a reactive maintenance environment.

  • Use the Reliability Culture Ladder Assessment to determine your current reliability culture.

In Week 10 you start to document you Reliability Strategy using all the pre-work you have done in the earlier weeks. You will start developing your Reliability Policy, Reliability Strategy, 2-Year Roadmap, Business Case and Case for Change Presentation using the provided templates. And using our 1-on-1 Coaching Calls you will have the opportunity to get very tailored advice from Erik on your situation and (draft) strategy.

Erik Hupje

Founder of the Reliability Academy and developer of the Road to Reliability Framework™.

For over 25+ years, I’ve worked in asset management, specifically in maintenance & reliability in the upstream oil & gas industry. I’ve worked in The Netherlands, the United Kingdom, the Philippines, the Sultanate of Oman, and Australia.

I have worked in some of the most reactive assets you can image, but by combining firsthand industry experience with in-depth industry research I have learned that escaping from a reactive maintenance environment, is not only possible, it is relatively simple (though not necessarily easy).

In the Reliability Strategy Sprint™ Program I will personally guide a small group of Maintenance Managers and Plant Managers to do exactly that: escape from the vicious cycle of reactive maintenance once and for all.

When will the program run?

This first program will commence in May and run over a period of 12 weeks. Exact dates of all online session will be confirmed by the end of April.

What time will the live sessions be?

We aim to run the program in two cohorts, one aimed at those based in the Americas time zones and one aimed at those in Europe, Africa, Middle East, and Asia.

We plan to run the live sessions (both the online workshops and Q&A sessions) at the following days and times (there will be one session per week per cohort):

Cohort 1: Americas
  • Alternating Tuesday or Wednesday
  • 2pm Los Angeles (PST) / 3pm Calgary and Mexico / 5pm New York (EST) /    6pm Rio de Janeiro / 9pm London
Cohort 2: Europe, Africa, Middle East and Asia
  • Alternating Tuesday or Friday
  • 9am London / 10am Paris / 1pm Dubai / 5pm Singapore / 7pm Brisbane

What happens if I can’t make a live session?

No problem, all live sessions (workshops and Q&A sessions) will be recorded so you can watch the replay if you miss the session, or if you want to go over some of the material at a future date (you will get lifetime access to the recordings).

How many spaces are there?

Spaces will be limited. In this first run of the program we will have a maximum of 6 places per cohort to ensure we get good interaction and I personally have sufficient time to provide high quality feedback as part of the 1-on-1 Coaching Calls.

How do I enrol?

To enrol, please complete the Expression of Interest form.

I will personally  review all Expressions of Interest and then invite the most suitable applicants to enrol in the program. If you are invited to enrol, please act quickly as places are limited and awarded on a first-come-first-served basis to those who have been offered a spot.

Why are you selective with applicants?

Due to the individual coaching aspects of this program, there are a very limited number of spots. We want to make sure we have well-balanced, strong cohorts of motivated Maintenance Managers and Plant Managers who truly want to make a difference. Strong cohorts will lead to a better experience for everyone.

How much will it cost?

Developing your Reliability Strategy with the help of external consultants will easily cost you $50,000 to $100,000 so this is a very cost-effective approach that will provide with an excellent strategy and roadmap to escape the vicious cycle of reactive maintenance, based on sound proven practices and a solid framework, but adjusted to your plant, your people, your culture.

The Reliability Strategy Sprint™ will cost USD 9,995 in the future, but this first release of the program comes with a 50% discount at USD 4,995. This will be a one-time offer.
